Life can be very tough and doing good does not always bring good our ways “the way we expect”. The place we were expecting to be lovingly rewarded by the supposed recipients of our acts of kindness happens many times to be the place where we get pains that we find very difficult to get over.
At moments like that the most common phrase and question that pops up from our mouths is What did I do Wrong? Who did I offend?
If there be any man most suitable and qualified to ask such questions in his time on earth, that man should be Jesus Christ.
He went about doing good. He healed the sick, raised the dead and fed the living hungry yet he was rewarded with crucifixion. What a paradox? For the kind words he spoke, he was mocked and for daring to believe in the Father and in his relationship with the Father he was labeled a mad man.
We would have all understood Jesus and even justified him if his favorite and final questions were “Who did I offend?” “What did I do wrong?”.
Life is not fair many of muse ceaselessly with voices flavored with evident disappointment and grief. Let me inform you dearly beloved, since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, life on earth, under the influence and power of the forces of darkness lost it’s capacity to be fair.
Jesus our master understood this and therefore he never let himself be discouraged or be heartbroken because of how badly he was treated for doing good.
Me and you cannot be wiser than our master and if we are determined to be good students of his word, we must imbibe the same mindset and attitude.
May I not give you false hope beloved of our God. A hope that will definitely be dashed because it is based on a false premise that the Father God himself didn’t establish and because He didn’t establish it, He does not have the obligation to defend it.
Let me be sincere enough to tell you that life is not fair and it’s unfairness is permitted out of God’s wisdom for our ultimate good. Imagine that fallen humanity exists without grace and mercy, first from God and then from fellow man.
Sometimes, you or those you care about are going to have loses, you and your loved ones will have delays, you and your cherished ones will be sick, you will lose a loved one and eventually, you too will die and leave this earth. And let me not forget, people will treat you badly and reward your acts of kindness with not so kind or outrightly wicked acts – life won’t be fair and lacks the capacity to be.
Having this harsh reality in mind, what then should be our attitude towards the inescapable fact that life is unfair and will not change from that anytime soon? Cringe and cry ourselves to depression? Or throw up our hands in the air and give up on life and its unfairness? NO! None of the above is an appropriate response to life’s trials and challenges.
